Does Unleash have a free tier?
Not on cloud. Unleash cloud gives you a 14-day trial and then moves to Pay-As-You-Go at $75 per seat per month, so there is no free hosted plan to stay on. The only free option is self-hosting the open-source edition, which is limited to 1 project and 2 environments and excludes SSO, custom RBAC, and change requests. Featureflip Solo is free forever in the cloud with no card and no trial clock, which is why a zero-seat estimate here shows the Unleash open-source self-host case rather than a free cloud tier.
Why does my Unleash bill grow when my traffic does not?
Because the price is driven by headcount, not usage. Every person who needs an Unleash login costs another $75 a month, so onboarding four engineers adds $3,600 a year even if your flag count and request volume are unchanged. The 53-million-request cloud allowance is generous, and Unleash backend SDKs evaluate locally and poll for updates, so most teams never reach the overage. Seats are the variable that actually moves the bill.
Can I avoid Unleash fees by self-hosting?
Yes. The open-source edition has no license fee, and it is the largest open-source feature flag project on GitHub. The trade-offs are operational ownership (database, upgrades, monitoring, on-call), a 1-project and 2-environment ceiling, an AGPL-3.0 server license that some legal teams treat differently from a permissive one, and no SSO, custom RBAC, or change requests. This calculator estimates the hosted cloud plan only; self-hosting cost is your infrastructure and engineering time, which no calculator can price for you.
How is this estimate calculated?
Seats are multiplied by the published $75 per seat per month, then any API requests above the 53-million monthly cloud allowance are added at $5 per million, and the total is annualised. It models the Cloud plan, so the 5-seat minimum (which applies to self-hosted Pay-As-You-Go) is not imposed on the math. Unleash publishes no annual-commit discount, so there is no billing toggle on the Unleash side. Featureflip is a flat price that does not move with seats or requests.
