Can I avoid Flagsmith fees by self-hosting?
Yes — Flagsmith's community edition is open source (BSD-3-Clause) and free to self-host, with no license fee and no seat cap. The trade-off is operational ownership: you run the database, application, and upgrades, and you're on call when something breaks. This calculator only estimates the metered hosted SaaS; self-hosting cost is your infrastructure and engineering time, not a number this tool can price for you.
What forces an upgrade from Start-Up to Scale-Up?
Two things: exceeding 1 million API requests a month, or needing a 4th team seat. Start-Up includes 3 seats and has no published seat add-on, so on list pricing a 4th hire means Scale-Up even if request volume is still small. Scale-Up includes 5 seats and lets you add more, up to 20, at $50 per seat per month on annual billing or $60 month-to-month.
How is this estimate calculated?
The calculator checks your API requests and team members against Flagsmith's free-tier caps first, then the lowest paid tier whose included requests and seats cover your usage. If your usage exceeds even Scale-Up's caps, it adds $50 per additional million requests and $50 per additional seat on annual billing ($60 month-to-month), up to 20 seats total. The $50-per-million figure is Flagsmith's starting overage rate, which falls with volume, so estimates at high traffic are an upper bound. Beyond 20 seats, Flagsmith is quote-only Enterprise. Featureflip's side is a flat price that does not change with request volume or requests-per-second traffic. Every rate is sourced and dated on this page.
